WhatsApp is reportedly working on introducing international payments through its in-app Unified Payments Interface (UPI) service. WhatsApp Payments or WhatsApp Pay was first introduced as an in-app service for users in India in November 2020. The platform was a late entry in the payments sector, as other platforms had already started services.

Now the instant messaging platform is working on adding international payments with a limit of up to three months to increase the user base of its financial service.

Information about this feature of WhatsApp was shared by tipster @AssembleDebug, who in a post on X said that “WhatsApp International Payments through UPI for Indian users. It is not currently available for users, but WhatsApp may be working on it because I could not find anything about it on Google. The tipster also shared screenshots of the feature but did not specify which beta version it was added to.

In the viral screenshot, a new option can be seen below the Forget UPI PIN option in the payment menu. The new feature is labeled International Payments feature and when clicked, it opens a separate screen where users can choose the start and end date for the feature and turn it on. As per the screenshot, users will have to enter the UPI PIN to turn on the feature.

Let us tell you that the international payment method allows users with Indian bank accounts to send money to selected international merchants and complete the transaction. This feature will work only in those countries where banks have started international UPI services. In India, international payment through UPI stops automatically, after which it needs to be activated manually again.

According to the tipster, there may be 3 months for this in WhatsApp. Apart from this, Google Pay provides an online transaction period of 7 days. Especially Google Pay, PhonePe, and some other companies in the UPI sector already provide this service.

Notably, major UPI players in India, such as Google Pay and PhonePe, already provide similar services. Since at present this feature has not been confirmed by WhatsApp or other beta testers. In such a situation, it cannot be trusted much. Some updates regarding this may come out in the coming days.
