How to Become a Cricket Umpire
Registration and Local Experience: To start the journey of becoming an umpire, you must first register with your state cricket body. This registration is based on your experience in umpiring at the local level.
State-Level Opportunities: You will get a chance to umpire in state-level matches. Your performance here is crucial to further your career.
BCCI Exam: After gaining enough experience, your name is sent to the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). You then have to pass the BCCI Level-1 umpire exam, which includes a three-day coaching class covering essential umpiring information.
Further Exams and Tests: Upon successfully passing the Level-1 exam, you become eligible for the BCCI Level-2 umpire exam. You will also have to pass a medical test to become a BCCI umpire.
Cricket Umpire Earnings
The BCCI pays its umpires based on their experience and grade. In first-class cricket tournaments, a Grade 'A' umpire earns around Rs 40,000 per day, while a Grade 'B' umpire gets around Rs 30,000 per day.
Good umpires have the chance to join the ICC (International Cricket Council) umpire panel. ICC panel umpires can earn from Rs 1.50 lakh to Rs 2.20 lakh per match. On an average, an ICC panel umpire earns around Rs 75 lakh annually.
