Friends, today mobile phones have become an important part of our lives, without them we cannot even imagine our life, but in recent times mobile users have become upset with fake calls and messages, whose complaints are being made continuously, to curb these things, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced new guidelines aimed at improving the security and transparency of telemarketing calls and commercial messages.

Under the new instructions, all major telecom operators including Airtel, Jio, Vodafone-Idea and BSNL are required to transfer telemarketing calls and messages (such as one-time passwords, promotional materials and account balance updates) starting from the 140 mobile number series to a blockchain-based distributed ledger technology (DLT) platform by September 30, 2024. Additionally, the header and sender codes in these commercial messages must be registered on the DLT platform.

Benefits of the new regulations

Reduction in fraudulent calls and messages: The implementation of the DLT platform is expected to significantly reduce the prevalence of fraudulent calls and messages, thereby enhancing overall user safety.

Penalties for misuse: TRAI has introduced penalties for using personal numbers for promotional calls, which will prevent misuse and encourage compliance with the new regulations.

Prevention of misuse: The Department of Telecommunications is actively working to prevent misuse of promotional material associated with the 140 and 160 number series.

Key dates and actions

From September 1, 2024: Telecom companies will be prohibited from sending messages containing URLs, APKs, OTT links or callback numbers.

Effective from November 1, 2024: TRAI plans to implement a system where information about both the sender and recipient of the message will be recorded.
