One of the most important epics of Hinduism, the Mahabharata is often referred to as the "Pancham Veda". It is filled with stories of legendary warriors, some of which are famous and some lesser-known. Among the many stories of the Mahabharata, there are some that are not so widely known.
For example, during the infamous episode of Draupadi's disrobing, while great warriors like Dronacharya and Bhishma remained silent, there was a Kaurava who raised his voice to protect the dignity of a woman. Let's take a deeper look at this lesser-known story.
Vikarna stood up against his own people
Vikarna, one of the Kauravas, stood up against the heinous act committed by Duryodhana and Dushasan during Draupadi's disrobing. He openly condemned their actions in the court. When Yudhishthira lost Draupadi in a game of dice, Vikarna protested the injustice. Dhritarashtra, Bhishma, Dronacharya and Kulguru Kripacharya remained silent during Draupadi's insult, but Vikarna was the only person who criticized Duryodhana and Dushasana's behavior.
Bhima and Vikarna's Confrontation
Even knowing the Kauravas' mistakes, Vikarna remained loyal to his brothers during the Mahabharata war. When the Pandavas encountered Vikarna on the battlefield, they were reluctant to fight him. During the confrontation between Bhima and Vikarna, Bhima initially refused to join the battle. However, Vikarna insisted that he knew the Kauravas were destined to lose, but he was performing his duty as a brother. He reminded Bhima of Draupadi's insult and fought the battle keeping that memory in mind. Vikarna emerged victorious in the battle. Bhima killed Vikarna.
