Guidelines for lighting Akhand Jyot
Mantra text: Chant the mantra while lighting the Akhand Jyot:
"Karoti Kalyanam, Arogyam Dhan Sampadaam, Shatru Buddhi Vinaashay, Deepam Jyoti Namostute." This invocation increases the auspiciousness of the ritual.
Preparing the wick: Use a Kalawa or Mauli (sacred thread) for the wick of the Akhand Jyot, as it is considered auspicious.
Setting the lamp:
Never place the Akhand Jyot directly on the ground. Instead, place it on a heap of grains for better energy flow.
If using ghee, place the lamp on the right side; for oil, place it on the left.
Presence in the house: After lighting the Akhand Jyot, ensure that the house is not empty. At least one family member should always be present.
Position of the lamp: Do not use a broken or previously lit lamp for the Jyot. A new lamp signifies purity and devotion.
Let it extinguish naturally: After Navratri ends, allow the Jyot to extinguish on its own. Avoid the temptation to extinguish it.
