Sweating is a natural process. This helps in keeping the body cool. When we stay in the sun or heat or do heavy work, we often sweat. This maintains moisture in the body and acts as a cooling agent. However, some people sweat unnecessarily. If this happens to you too, do not make the mistake of ignoring it. Because it is a medical condition known as hyperhidrosis. What is this disease? Why does this happen? DrVikramjeet Singh- Senior Consultant, Internal Medicine, Aakash Healthcare, New Delhi is giving all this information.

What is Hyperhidrosis?

Hyperhidrosis is a disease in which the sweat glands of your body become overactive. Due to this, you sweat a lot. You become sweaty even without doing any activity. It can affect your entire body or some specific parts of the body like palms, soles, and underarms. Due to this disease, you sweat even during the winter season. There are mainly two types of sweating.

How many types of hyperhidrosis are there and what are its causes?

  • If there is no disease responsible for sweating, then we know it as primary hyperhidrosis. In this, the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands become overactive and excessive sweating starts without any need, mainly on the hands and face. There is sweating in the head and underarms.
  • When you sweat as a side effect of the medicine given for any disease or illness, then we call it secondary hyperhidrosis. This problem occurs in adults.

Other reasons for excessive sweating

  • heart disease
  • Diabetes
  • stroke
  • Thyroid
  • menopause
  • lung disease
  • Parkinson's disease
