In this fast, Mahadev Ji and Mother Gauri Parvati are worshipped. Women observe fast throughout the day do full makeup at night and worship Lord Shiva and Parvati.

What is the meaning of Hartalika?
When Mother Parvati came to know that her father had fixed her marriage with Lord Vishnu, she became extremely sad. Seeing her sadness, a friend of Parvati Ji asked her the reason for her sadness. Parvati ji narrated her plight that she worships Lord Shiva with a true heart and cannot even think of anyone other than him as her husband. Then her friend convinced her not to lose courage and go with them. After convincing Parvati ji in this way, her friend took her to a penance place in the forest, where even her father could not reach her. There Parvati ji started doing rigorous penance for Lord Shiva. As a result, Lord Shiva appeared to him and said yes to marrying him as per Parvati's wish. After this Parvati ji broke her fast and performed Parana the next morning. This day was on the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month.

The word Hartalika means that Parvati ji's friend had taken her to Har, which means she had kidnapped her, hence Har, and Table mean friends.
