Why is Ganesh Utsav celebrated for 10 days?

It is believed that Ved Vyas ji prayed to Lord Ganesha to write the Mahabharata. Lord Ganesha wrote the Mahabharata for 10 days without stopping. During this time, due to continuous writing at one place, dust and dirt accumulated on Ganesh ji's body and on the 10th day, Ganesh ji took a bath in the Saraswati river and cleaned the dust and dirt accumulated on his body, since then the idol of Ganesh ji is immersed on the 10th day of Ganesh Utsav.

According to another belief, Lord Ganesha travels on earth during these 10 days, where his devotees welcome him and invite him to their home. During this time, his idol is installed in homes and public places. On the tenth day i.e. Anant Chaturdashi, this festival concludes, the idol of Ganesh ji is immersed and the devotees bid him farewell and seek blessings to come next year.

How was Ganesh ji born?
Lord Shri Ganesh ji was born from the dirt of Mother Parvati's body. He breathed life into the idol and entrusted Ganesh with the task of guarding his room. When Goddess Parvati's husband Lord Shiva tried to enter the chamber, Ganesha, unaware of Shiva's identity, blocked his way. Lord Shiva got angry and cut off Ganesha's head. The saddened mother pleaded with Shiva to bring her son back to life. Shiva replaced Ganesha's head with an elephant's head and he got a new life.
