Why does chilli cause burning sensation in the eyes?
Chilli contains a compound called capsaicin, which is mainly responsible for burning sensation. Capsaicin interacts with specific receptors near the nose and mouth. These, known as capsaicin receptors or vanilloid receptors (TRIPV1), are highly sensitive to chemicals present in chili peppers. When capsaicin comes in contact with these receptors, it triggers a burning pain response.
When does the burning sensation intensify?
The burning sensation caused by capsaicin can be even more intense in certain conditions. For example, these receptors are particularly reactive in hot weather. When the temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius, they can become more sensitive, causing a greater burning sensation.
Additionally, if you eat spicy food and then use the bathroom the next morning, you may experience a similar burning sensation due to the effect of capsaicin on mucous membranes in areas such as the anus and genitals.
How to get relief from burning sensation
Milk: Washing your eyes with milk can help neutralize the burning sensation. The fat in the milk binds with the capsaicin and helps remove it from the surface of your eyes.
Cold water compress: Soak a towel in cold water and gently wipe your eyes to soothe the burning sensation.
Hot air: Blowing hot air onto a towel and placing it over your eyes can provide relief by reducing the burning sensation.
Ghee: Applying a mixture of cold water and ghee on cotton and placing it on your eyes can also help.
