On the day of Nahay Khay, the fasting people take a bath and meditate in the morning. On this day, the fasting person should wear clean clothes. Perform daily puja. Then they are given gourd vegetable, gram dal, rock salt, rice, and radish for food. However, in some places, pigeon pea dal is prepared. Today the fasting person has to eat only this. The same food is available for dinner also. On the day of Nahay Khay, before eating food, offerings are made to Lord Ganesha and Sun God. Then he himself eats food. Then it will have to be eaten the next day.

Those who observe fast have to lead a virtuous life from the day of Nahay Khay. They have to maintain distance from tamasic things like paan, tobacco, alcohol, meat, etc. The rules of celibacy have to be strictly followed. A fasting person is prohibited from sleeping on the bed during Chhath Puja. The ghats are cleaned on the day of Nahay Khay. The place of Chhathi Maiya is decorated.
