This year Aja Ekadashi fast is on Sunday, 10th September in Ravi Pushya Yoga. Aja Ekadashi fast is observed on the Ekadashi date of Krishna Paksha of Bhadrapada month. On this day, worship Lord Shri Hari Vishnu or Lord Rishikesh and observe fast regularly. Dharmaraja Yudhishthir requested Lord Krishna to tell him about the importance of the Bhadrapada Krishna Ekadashi fast and the method of worship. Then Shri Krishna said that it is popular by the name of Aja Ekadashi. By observing this fast all sins are destroyed. A person gets the same virtue as Ashvamedha Yagya. After death, a person gets a place in Vaikuntha. The story of Aja Ekadashi fast is like this-

According to the legend, once upon a time, a Chakravarti king Harishchandra ruled. One day he abandoned his kingdom, wealth, son, and wife and sold himself. A Chandal bought him. Now he has become the slave of Chandal. He used to take the clothes of the dead as per the orders of Chandal, but he did not leave his true religion. He never deviated from the path of truth.

When the king was alone, he used to think how he would be able to come out of this situation. How will he be saved? What should he do about this? The king spent many years doing all this. One day suddenly he met Gautam Rishi. He bowed down and told his grief.

Then Gautam Rishi said that after 7 days from today, Aja Ekadashi of the Krishna Paksha of the month of Bhadrapada is going to come. You should do that fast and methodically. By observing that fast, all your sins will be destroyed and your sorrows will end. Saying this, Gautam Rishi left from there.

King Harishchandra, on the suggestion of sage Gautam, observed Aja Ekadashi fast and worshiped Lord Shri Hari. Due to the virtuous effect of this fast, all the sins of King Harishchandra were destroyed and his dead son came back to life. His wife returned to her previous form. She was dressed like a queen. Due to the virtuous effect of this fast, he got his kingdom back again. At last King Harishchandra went to heaven with his family.

Lord Shri Krishna told Yudhishthir that the person who observes the fast of Aja Ekadashi properly and keeps vigil at night, all his sins are erased and he attains heaven. The person who listens to the story of Aja Ekadashi fast gets the fruits of Ashwamedha Yagya.
